Henry was born on 1 February 1864, the son of Frederick John Hadden and Margaret Jane Harvey, at Scarborough, Yorkshire. His father, Frederick, was a coffee planter of Ceylon, and a lace manufacturer of Nottingham.
He attended school in Rugby, Warwickshire. He matriculated at University College, Oxford, on Oct. 13, 1883. B.A. 1887 (History Tripos) and M.A. 1890, the same year he became a solicitor. He married Maude Gertrude Annesley Webster-Wedderburn. They first settled in at his house Gabledene, at Walton-on-Thames. Maude was already pregnant at the time of the marriage. Soon afterwards Henry bought Woodcroft, in Stanmore.
The marriage lasted about ten years. He divorced Maude on the grounds of adultery with William Rider.


Henry married Maude Gertrude Annesley WEBSTER-WEDDERBURN, daughter of Maj. George Gordon Gerard WEBSTER-WEDDERBURN and Caroline DIXON, on 24 Sep 1892 in St Mathias, Earl's Court, London, England.1 The marriage ended in divorce on 11 Aug 1902. (Maude Gertrude Annesley WEBSTER-WEDDERBURN was born on 11 Jan 1871 in Newccastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, England and died on 6 Nov 1930 in Camberwell House, Camberwell, Surrey, England.)
