John Henry Courtenay emigrated from Newry, Ireland to the United States circa 1818. John Henry Courtenay came to America aboard the ship "Achilles" sailing from Bristol, England and arrived Boston, MA and soon thereafter settled in Illinois. The family story is that he was a toll collector in Newry, Ireland [source: Patricia M. Rankin, West Palm Beach, FL].


John married Esther RHAMES, daughter of Benjamin RHAMES and Elizabeth, on 7 Apr 1795 in St. John, Dublin, Ireland. (Esther RHAMES was christened on 10 Apr 1768 in St. John, Dublin, Ireland.)
